First reaction to Catcher in the Rye
This book is a lot different than I thought it was going to be. The way that everything that happens in the book is so normal, you can identify with it so easy. It's all these mundane things that could and probably have happened to most people. I think that that was why the book was so popular amongst younger readers when it was released. They can see themselves being his character in the book. There were even a couple things in the book that I could connect with. Like when he's talking to the old guy, and how he doesn't really want to be there but he feels obligated to. That has happened to me and probably many other people too. It wasn't as story-like as I thought it would be, it was so real. It's like it could actually be happening.

Wow...great connections in such a short time of reading. You are in the right frame of mind when reading this classic. I want you to go in with an evaluative mind; that is, examining why it appealed to SO many when it first came out.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you...I think it is very easy to relate to Holden's perspective and simple writing style. He's casual and it appeals to people like us.
Since you read a lot, I encourage you to look at this book as a ground-breaking text. See if you can make connections to modern literature you read today. After all, Salinger helped shape the literature world in big ways.
I'm excited to read your blog in the future!!!
